Welcome to JK/SK and Grade 1
We will try to keep you up to date weekly with what is going on in class. We hope to make this year an amazing journey of learning for your child!
Welcome!! September 29, 2016
We are now into week 4 of the school year. I can’t believe we are heading into October! Please remember that Friday, September 30 is a PD day.
News: Congratulations to Chloe, Jacob, and Anakin for receiving the first Student of the Month Awards for Respect and Manners.
October 3: Picture Day will be on October 3.
Toys: Toys at school are becoming a problem. We would like it if you can make sure that only a maximum of 2 toys come to school and no stuffies should be brought to school.
Celebration: We will be celebrating Thanksgiving with a lunch of “stone soup” on October 6 at 11:30. All parents are welcome to join us. More details to follow.
FYI: Our trip to the Superior Children’s Centre’s Story Walk last Friday morning was a success! I wish I could have been there. The students did a fantastic job of representing our school. The Story Walk was great!!
Now for our weekly news;
Language: We continued with the story “Brown Bear, Brown Bear” this week and are completing book of our own that will be coming to your home soon. We will be continuing with Reading and Phonological Awareness assessments next week. We learned about the letter “Ii” in Jolly Phonics and the sound it makes. We came up with a list of words that start with that sound like igloo, ink and iguana. We will start the letter “Pp” next. In oral language we have all contributed to our own class story each taking a turn to add one detail.
Math: We have completed the assessment for patterning and sorting and are ready to start number sense next week.
Language: We have read “Hey Little Ant” this week. We wrote a journal entry about what we feel the “kid” should do, step on the ant or not step on the ant. The children were very passionate about what they would do. We are beginning to learn how to write on our own sounding out words, looking at the word wall, and asking the teacher to add the word to our personal dictionaries. We are working on words that start with the “s” sound in our Phonics books this week and printing the letter Nn.
Math: The children are counting from one to twenty and putting those numbers in order. Ordinal numbers and comparing numbers using the anchor of 5 and 10 are also what we worked on this week.
Grade 1 and Kindergarten
Science: We know the characteristics of insects and can identify insects by these characteristics. We learned that dragonflies have been around for 300 million years, they fly at a speed of 30-60 km per hour, and they do not sleep, only rest.
French: The children are reviewing numbers and colours this week in French, as well as the names of things around the classroom.
Gym: The children are working on fitness circuits in gym class!
Art: We read the book “The Dot” in class and made a dot picture.
Computers: We are back on www.teachyourmonstertoread.com for computers and also www.abcya.com for the JK children this week. The grade 1s are going to be starting a program called prodigy to work on their math skills.
We have struggled with the rules and behaviours appropriate for the classroom this week! This will be a focus for next week.
Thank you for sending your children to us so that we can help them to become all that they can be!
