Friday January 19th

We are now focusing on oral story telling in our classroom. The oral stories for the next few weeks are folk and fairy tales such as The Three Little Pigs, Chicken Little and The Emperor’s New Clothes. Each story has a number of felt pieces that I use to tell the story and then the felt pieces are left on the board for a few days so that the students can retell the story using the characters and setting pieces on their own or in a small group.

Reading groups have continued this week and I love to see how quickly the SKs are using their phonetic skills to sound out and blend together sounds to create words. The JKs continue to work on the alphabet with many engaging activities.

In Jolly Phonics we finished with the letter Oo early this week and then the letter Uu was introduced. Since these are vowels and in so many of our words we are taking our time with these letters.

Our trip to the Post Office was awesome. The little ones were so well behaved and Mrs. Andrews showed us what happens to our mail after we put a stamp on it and send it in the mail drop box. She gave us a stamp cancel stamper so once we got back to our classroom on Monday morning we quickly got to work creating our own Wawa Post Office. O’Rion made a sign, Warren gathered some mail buckets and Emersyn help me find some paper, stamps and envelopes. This is one very popular center with everyone taking turns cancelling stamps, filling up the mail truck and delivering mail to everyone. If you have any extra envelopes, cards, note pad paper, etc we would appreciate the donations to add to our center.

In math the focus is still on measurement, however instead of length and width we are focusing on weight and comparing two items to determine which is heavy and which is lighter. We will be using a balance scale to help us with small items. This is a great visual tool to use for weight comparison.
