Welcome to The Kindergarten Room

Kindergarten Newsletter
Friday, October 6th

Wow, it’s October already! It’s hard to believe that we have been learning and exploring in our room for 23 schools days already.

Next Wednesday we have been invited to a Story Walk put on by the Best Start Hub. The walk takes place at Queen’s Park from 10:30 – 11:30. We will be leaving the school around 10:15 and returning just before lunch time. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather (we will not go if it is raining) and you are certainly more than welcome to join us either here at the school to walk down with us or just down at the park.

Don’t forget next Friday is also picture day here at SJD.

Today we enjoyed our Friendship Salad and I would like to thank all the families for sending in those delicious fruits to add to our salad. We cut them up and as we added them to the bowl we pretended that each was a friendship ingredient that we were adding to our salad. At the end I went to cut up a rotten banana and they all agreed that I should not add that to our salad. We decided that the rotten banana represented characteristics that do not make a good friend. This was a great visual to remind us all to be kind, caring, sharing and respectful to our friends and not to be a rotten banana.

This week in the Jolly Phonics program we focused on the letter Pp. We made a list of Pp words, practiced printing the letter Pp, read a book that focused on the letter Pp and sang a Pp song. Next week we will introduce the letter Nn. This week we added to our word wall list using s, a, t, i and p. to spell and sound out a few more words. It is always great if you could practice at home with your child slowly sounding out words (one letter at a time) and then begin to blend them together until they hear the word. Words that we are practicing now are (at, it, sit, sat, pat and pit).

In the math area this week we continued to practice identifying numbers in many different ways. We looked at number books, watched a few number video songs and used hands on manipulatives to create the numbers. Next week we will begin to represent these numbers using ten frames. Ten frames allow a visual for students, as well as once they can identify five in the top row they will only need to count on from five to identify a number.

Thank-you for sharing your little ones with me again this week,

Mrs. Bernath
