Welcome to The Kindergarten Room

Kindergarten Newsletter

Friday, November 17th

Yesterday was our Hibernation Day and it was so much fun! All week we have been learning about animals that hibernate, migrate and adapt to the winter weather. We did two science experiments this week. One was testing how arctic animals stay warm in the winter using ice water and lard and the other experiment was how penguins stay dry in the cold water. We colored a penguin with wax crayons and then sprayed water on it to see how the water beads up.
This has been such a fun inquiry and it seems like Police Officers may be one of our next inquiries. Mr. Levi Brousseau will be coming in to talk to us on Tuesday morning.

In math we have been learning a few new shape names and using a variety of manipulatives to create shapes, focusing on using math words like sides and corners (vertices). The new shape names we learned were trapezoid and rhombus.

This week in between all the hibernation activities and stories we focused on the letter Hh. We now have many words on the word wall and it is so great to see the little ones using their clip boards and writing down words that they see around the room. Just a reminder to try and take every opportunity you have to practice simple blending and segmenting of words with you child. Take a word like cat and sound out each sound c-a-t and have your child blend them back together to create the word. This is a difficult skill to master, but once they can hear the word as it is segmented out it will help them when they begin reading.

Just a reminder to check the Show and Tell schedule and have your little one ready with their clues. They sure do not like to miss their scheduled days. It is neat to hear their oral language development through this activity. During the “tell” part of show and tell the students are beginning to use more details to describe their object (how it works, where they keep it at home, where they got it from, etc.) and also the audience is learning how to ask better questions.

Thank-you for sharing your little ones with me again this week,

Mrs. Bernath
